Hello, and welcome to the Season of Music for the Get Messy Art Journaling group. Although the season doesn’t officially start until Monday, I have jumped in early and made myself a few journals to use. I’ve gone a little crazy and decided to make a mini journal for each week – and by mini I mean tiny! Two of them are less than 3in x3in. I thought I would share my plan and how I made the journals with you now, before the season starts.
So far I have 5 journals – and one isn’t hand-made – one is a Moleskine Postal Notebook. Katie from the Creative Team recently posted a how-to on making your own version of these. She’s a clever chick that Katie. I plan on making and sending this journal to someone special.
The first journal I made is the largest of them all – this one is about the size of a regular Moleskine Sketchbook which I’m comfortable with. And it has about 10-12 pages in it. I figure this one will be a bit harder to fill up in one week, so I might work on this one each week depending how the prompts inspire me. The cover is made from a sheet of canvas paper with water colour, and a couple of packing tape transfers. Man I love that technique.
I experimented with different sized pages, and paper types and stitched them together using pamphlet stitch following a tutorial I found online. I also made a second pamphlet stitch journal that is about 8 inches high by 4 inches wide. This one I have already started working in – it will be an ode to one of my favourite musicians. Hopefully the prompts will somehow fit in with this plan – I’m sure they will.
Next up is a little zine made out of one sheet of paper from an old music book. Again, I followed a tutorial on how to make this one. The cover is decorated with modelling paste, a handmade starburst stencil and my trusty letter stencil. I used a glaze to add the colour.
And now for the tiny journals. These were really fun to make, but a little fiddly as they are so tiny. Here are the tutorials. The extra tiny one is a Mini Modular Origami book and the second is an origami Blizzard Book. I’ve used water colour paper on the one on the left, and the teeny tiny one is made with Kraft paper – I’m interested to see how that holds up with mixed media.
And now the extra fun bit begins – filling each of these little beauties with art. Come back again on Thursday and I’ll show you my first creation.
